STREB Emerging Artist Commissioning Program

STREB is pleased to announce that the following artist's have been selected to receive the S.L.A.M. Emerging Artist Grant. We were moved and excited to see all of the applications and the many dynamic ideas that were proposed. We support all of the artists with encouragement to continue their exploration and to reapply as we hope to continue this program at S.L.A.M.

Kyle Abraham
Scaling - The proposed work will capture tight spaces, abstract forms and all things difficult and unfamiliar. Working with two high standing grafted poles, 5 to 7 dancers will use the poles and each other's bodies to investigate different ways in which we perceive the word "scaling."

Ami Ipapo
A collaboration with Matt Tarr connecting specific movements of STREB's Little Ease to the outside world to openly blur the lines between dance & movement, art & life, beauty & function, even participant & observer.

Project Luminosity
Exploring light as central to creation and it's thematic manifestations (physical, mental and spiritual) throughout people's lives. Lights will be used in unexpected and evocative ways and the audience will be introduced to intriguing facts about light, electricity, religious and mythological encounters with illumination, and what can occur at the speed of light.

Kitao Sakurai
A collaborative flying trapeze act with Randy Kohn, Manny Martinez and Susie Williams, that will recontextualize the flying trapeze aparatus and infuse it with explosive drama, the shock of flight, and a completely novel approach to choreography. The core aim will be to inspire sheer awe using a new vocabulary of bodies flying through space.
